3 Big Jewelry Trends You Must Know for 2017

2017 jewelry trends - big necklaces

Statement Necklaces

There is a lot of big and bold going on in the jewelry arena! The first big one is Statement necklaces. Forget the small and simple pendants because it is time for those statement ones. Statement pendants are undoubtedly catchier than the tiny ones. You can try wearing those statement pendants and necklaces if you find that the small ones are boring and do not provide you with the catchy look you need. There are many impressive designs that can increase your beauty and make you catchier on different occasions especially the formal ones.  Instyle magazine forecasts that the big and bold long necklaces are going to replace the choker that  has been popular for a while.

Second big one is Bracelets and arm cuffs. In 2017, modern solid cuffs take center stage. Solid cuffs add a modern artistic flair to any outfit. Many cuffs can be stacked for a more unique look.

Art Earrings

Third must know – Art earrings with innovative materials, graphic shapes and arty inspiration. Single oversized earrings, earcuffs and single large earrings. Want to look different and attract more attention? Do you love earrings but do not like the idea of wearing them? You can try wearing single earrings to decorate just one ear. It is not the first time for this catchy jewelry trend to appear as it was seen before during the past years and continues to be a big jewelry trend in the next year. art earrings jewelry trend 2017art earrings and single earrings jewelry trend 2017

And if you are not so much for the big huge necklaces try Multilayered necklaces. If you still love those small pendants and do not like the idea of wearing statement necklaces and pendants because they do not suit your personality, then there is no problem. You can wear those necklaces with small pendants but in large number and multiple layers. This means that wearing only one necklace with small pendant is not trendy and multilayered necklaces are the jewelry trend you can opt for to enjoy your small pendants.

2017 trends color of the year greenery green pantone

Fashion Trends and Colors 2017

Greenery - color of the year 2017 greenIt seems that this year is all about green, because it is the selected Pantone color of the year, and also blues in various tones, and, continuing presence of pink (oh I love that!). Artistic patterns are in, as well as geometric, so anything using lots of color variation and random pattern, go for it! I have recently made enameled copper earrings that are “painterly” meaning mixing colors while the enamel is still hot. Wonderful effects can be achieved this way! Also, the trend is towards handmade, instead of diy – interior designers are choosing artisan created items that take skill to make. That’s awesome news for us artisan jewelry makers, too! Anyway, here are some commentary from the fashion gurus.

Pink - another color for the year 2017

IN: “There was an artistically inspired theme across the runways,” says Kate Foley, contributing fashion director of Vestiaire Collective. “From Roksanda and Céline to J.W.Anderson, Proenza Schouler, Marni, Valentino, and many other brands, whether directly inspired by a particular artist’s work, painterly prints, or patterns, strong art references will be here to stay in 2017.”

Trends for 2017 - geometric prints colorful

Designer and stylist Josiah Chua, 28, says the high-end Italian label has been leading the way with the vintage look for the past few seasons and the sentimental style does not appear to be fading.

“Even accessories such as huge rings and necklaces will be on trend too. It is about 1990s fashion as well – cartoon motifs and pop and retro prints.”

Vibrant, geometric prints. Pink, pink pink!

80S BABIES

From metallics to mini lengths, sequins and strong shoulders—houses from Saint Laurent to Vuitton are taking time machines back to the Reagan era.

BRIGHT GREEN

Elle says about home decor:

For years, the world has been obsessed with DIYs pulled from Pinterest, Instagram and, of course, Etsy, but designers are now looking toward items that are more “artisan” than “quick and easy”. You’ll see craftsmanship and materials that require you to have a high level of skill to work with them emerge,”. “You’ll see the return of glass blowing, porcelain and even amazing woodworking — not just raw big chunks of recycled wood.

Yarn bombing at the Morris Arboretum Yarn art Yarn love

Inspirations at Yarn Bombing

Yarn blasting Morris Arboretum Art installation
Yes, I had never heard of it either! I recently visited Morris Arboretum to see their yarn bombing installation on trees (and a few other places). I found it actually really inspiring, was not expecting that at all. Various trees were wrapped in large knitted or crocheted pieces of very colorful yarn creations. In the serene atmosphere of the arboretum it surely made an effect.

It wasn’t only trees, either, I thought the idea of wrapping the wooden doors in machine knit was also rather interesting! Who doesn’t want a door with a knit cover….? Some of the little bridges were also wrapped, all those little tiny spaces! And the Greek looking columns  next to the swan pond, I bet the swans thought it to be fascinating, too…

I found myself going around and around like a little kid. This might cause some inspirational pieces in my jewelry cYarn blasting Morris Arboretumreations!

spring 2016 color trends

Inspirations From Spring 2016 Fashion

Spring 2016 colors - rose quartzIn the winter I have more time to follow the fashion trends and I must say this Spring is very promising! The colors are wonderful – blues and pinks – Serenity, Snorkel Blue, Limpet Shell, Rose Quartz, some peach and yellow. So pretty and fantastic! I have a bunch of Rose quartz in my gem bead selection and also the beautiful Blue Chalcedony – it matches perfectly the 2016 fashion color Serenity.

I was also browsing some runway showings and saw this gorgeous lavender that Rebecca Minkoff is using, among others. Just so lovely. You almost smell a whiff of spring air when you see that color! Rose quartz, Blue chalcedony, Lavender pearl or Amethyst stone jewelry would match perfectly.

The fashionistas are also saying that extra long earrings are in and even the idea of wearing completely unmatched pairs! Not sure if I want to go there, but it’s an interesting idea.

etching copper

Etching Experiments

Etching copper

Etching pan and the etched copper piece with the electrical wire and foamies attached

There are so many techniques to try when it comes to making copper jewelry. I just had to try etching. It requires the use of some chemicals, although I am learning there might be ways to etch using some more natural ingredients. (Hopefully, more on that later.)

You can buy these etching kits which makes trying it very easy. You get a pan to put your etching liquid (ferric chloride is the chemical), foam thingies to float your copper and the required electrical current gadget. All you need is a piece of copper and rubber gloves. You are supposed to use distilled water, I used Brita water and was just fine (tap water that has been put through a filter that removes impurities).

There are many ways to produce the picture you want to etch on copper. I used an oil based marker and just drew the picture. Some other etching hobbyists use things like ink transfers (from laser printer), Staz-on ink, lettering systems, even UV film.

Copper etching kit

The etching kit – pan, ferric chloride, foamies, wire and the gadget you plug in.

So, I had my picture drawn on a very well cleaned piece of copper. I mixed my etching granules with the water and let it dissolve. You then have to cover the back side of your copper with tape so it doesn’t etch, attach the etching gadget wire on the back of your copper piece under the tape, and insert these foam pads on the sides so it can float and doesn’t fall on the bottom of your pan. Submerge the item in the etching liquid, turn the power on and wait.

I let mine etch for a couple of hours, I realize it was way too long! The time depends on the size of the piece, or the depth of etching you want. Many patterns you don’t need to etch very deep. A good thing also is that you can reuse the solution. Eventually it will lose its power, but it should last for many etchings. Just please remember to take your used etching liquid to a hazardous waste facility when you’re done, no hurting of fishes allowed! Now I just want to figure out a way to do this with some natural non-toxic materials!

My puffin happily etched. You can clean the marker lines with nail polish remover.

blue patina copper experiment

Patina Play

ammonia salt patina on copper evadesigns maine handmade jewelryIt seems that the natural patina process is a very sought after topic right now – I get questions all the time. It’s really a lot of experimenting, and essentially you need to have fun with it. It won’t always work, you might try really hard to fume something for days and your patina all washes off! That is really part of the whole idea. It is easy to paint on some fake patina and call it “patina jewelry”, “patina art” or “patina decoration”. Why not challenge yourself and create something natural that the powers of the atmosphere and some real ingredients made happen?

I will list the steps of my latest ammonia patina experiment. This is a lot of fun, but remember to wear a mask or at least do not breath in the fumes.

ammonia fuming method for copper

The blue abyss for your copper!

Solution – ammonia with a little salt
(There are many actual recipes, I just eyeball this.)

  1. Cut, shape, sand, clean your copper really well.
  2. Prepare a container (plastic, glass) where you can hang something to suspend your items and that has a way to seal it (lid, plastic, etc.). Put some of your solution on the bottom of your container.
  3. Spray your copper pieces with the solution and some salt (occasionally I also add baking soda).
  4. Suspend your pieces on top of the solution and close the lid.
  5. Let fume for a few hours to a day, then check. You may want to sprinkle them again or spray with your solution. Let fume as long as you think they look the way you want. There will be a crumbly or fuzzy coating of blue on top of your copper.
  6. Rinse well carefully, let dry for a day.
  7. Coat with your preferred method (clear coat, wax, etc.)
  8. Make into jewelry, wear and enjoy or give to a friend!
